Babies are indeed a blessing to every family. Nothing beats the joy a new baby brings to parents and grandparents. You may have mastered parenting skills over the years, but as a grandparent for the first time, you will also have a lot to learn.

But if done right, you’ll be the new grandparent to your kids and grandchildren!

Here are 5 grandparent parenting tips for beginners:

Remember, they are your grandchildren, not your children

If you have a set of rules for raising children, don’t expect the same rules to apply to your grandchildren unless, of course, parents enforce them. Let your child and his/her partner raise their child on their own terms – don’t expect a circus seat or offer unsolicited advice. If new parents need your advice, they will ask for theirs. Emphasize respect for parental decisions and boundaries.

call ahead

It’s hard to resist your newborn grandkids/granddaughters, if you could only spend time with them 24/7, you would. Although resistance may be difficult, don’t join at any time. Be sure to call ahead to make plans – new parents are under constant pressure and they don’t need to go through the struggles of dealing with unexpected visitors, even family members.

always help

While having a newborn at home is indeed a wonderful time, it is also a very sensitive time. Always help and ask if the couple or baby needs anything, but don’t insist. It is recommended to take the baby to give the mother time for naps or showers. Being present and helpful from day one shows that you care about your new family and that you are someone they can trust and rely on.

don’t score

There’s nothing wrong with bathing your grandkids with love, affection, and gifts, but remember, grandparenting is not a competitive sport. Don’t compete with another set of grandparents or anyone else – it’s never about who gave the biggest or most expensive gift, it’s about keeping it light and happy.

there for new parents

People are so fascinated by how cute their newborn babies are that they forget to ask about the new parents. They are also going through a huge adjustment and know they have a long way to go with a strong support system.
